I give this place a 5 star rating. It is the most beautiful place to have a wedding. Everything that you would need is at Ostertag Vistas. Your wedding will leave a lasting impression on your family and friends.
I just wanted again to thank you for everything you did to make my daughter’s wedding the wedding she always dreamed of! Everyone had a good time and loved the barn setting. … and again thank you so much for all your help!
I wanted to thank you and Donna again for everything in helping us make our wedding day special! We greatly appreciate everything you had done for us !
My wedding and reception was at Ostertag Vistas and our guests loved every minute of it. It was large and yet very cozy and offered different venues for guests to go depending on what they wanted. We had our ceremony in front of the old cottage but were torn between that site and the willow tree next to the brook. It was gorgeous. The staff set up our chairs, helped with parking, and then set up for the reception. They were great! A great deal for the money. There was a lot of activity for my husband and I during the day, but I must admit it was the best day of my life…so far and such a perfect place for our wedding.
First, I’d like to thank you and everyone at Ostertag who helped with my daughter’s wedding on October 25th. Everything was beautiful and your staff helped us in every way to have the wedding our daughter had always wanted. With our nerves ‘on end’ anyway, your help was greatly appreciated. I’m sure things wouldn’t have gone so smoothly without everyone’s help. I would like to especially thank Terri. She was assigned to help us and she went above and beyond anything we could have asked for…Please let her know how much we appreciate everything she did for us. We had so many compliments on our choice of venue for the wedding. Everyone thought the barn, the grounds and the decor were beautiful!

Couldn’t have asked for a better venue and team. Our wedding was absolutely breathtaking🫶🏻
I don’t have enough words to describe how perfect our wedding day was; it felt like an absolute dream come true! From the moment we started planning to the final dance of the evening, every single detail came together flawlessly, exceeding all our expectations.
The venue was breathtaking; it created the most magical backdrop for our big day. The staff went above and beyond to ensure everything ran smoothly, allowing us to fully soak in every moment without a single worry. If you’re in the process of planning your wedding, know that finding the right team to bring your vision to life makes all the difference — and we were so fortunate to have found just that. We’ll be forever grateful for the memories we made. 💕
Stunning, Fabulous, Beautiful
We couldn’t have asked for a more perfect day for our wedding, and we have the amazing people at Ostertag to thank for that. Donna Easterday worked meticulously with my wife, going over logistics and payment planning. Whether it was email, text or phone call, she made sure she was available. Our Day-Of Coordinator, Kim Schwartz, was a ROCKSTAR! The venue was beautiful on its own but her little touches made all the difference. From setup to break down, everything was handled flawlessly. Thank you again for making our wedding day unforgettable!
Perfect Venue!
We just had our wedding at Ostertag Vistas, and it was absolutely incredible. The location is absolutely stunning, exactly what we wanted. We hired Donna Easterday, whose family owns the venue, to be our day of coordinator. She was ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE. I’m so impressed by her professionalism and organizational skills… add this to the fact she has such a kind and helpful heart she made for the perfect person to support us during our day. Without her, our day wouldn’t have been the same. She made sure everything ran smoothly and it was the magical day we had dreamed of. She made sure all of the decorations were completed. She also made sure that during the wedding our guest book was signed, pictures were taken, favors were passed and so much more. There was so much more that Donna did to make our day flow smoothly and perfectly. We have absolutely no regrets in picking this location – it was everything we could have hoped for. It was affordable, beautiful, and we felt completely supported and cared for. Thank you, Donna, and family, for sharing your beautiful place with us and for an incredibly magical day – we are so incredibly thankful for ALL you did – we couldn’t have pulled off such a magical day without your help!
Great Accommodating Service
This venue was perfect for our wedding, it was beautiful and scenic. Donna was our Day of Coordinator and went up and beyond with her services. Since covid rules were lifted just a few weeks before our wedding, she was so accommodating with changing our plans. She helped our wedding day run very smoothly and also did an excellent job setting up the decorations we provided her. Our dog was a part of our ceremony. I can’t say enough how accommodating she was! I highly recommend Ostertag Vistas!
Stunning Venue
Ostertag Vistas was a stunningly beautiful venue which had all our guests in awe. The outdoor ceremony with rolling hills in every direction framed every shot. Then we had cocktails and hors d’oeuvres on the large patio followed by a full meal and dancing in the barn. The barn had sparkling lights everywhere!!! It was so beautiful!
We also used Donna and Kim at Ostertag as wedding planners and and they were fantastic!
Wonderful experience
We held our daughter’s wedding reception here in early December. The setting is lovely and very scenic. The barn interior is a warm and unique gathering place and our guests really enjoyed themselves there. Donna was a pleasure to work with throughout the entire planning process – efficient, patient, and very professional
Amazing venue for a wedding
Ostertag Vistas is absolutely incredible!! Donna was so welcoming and extremely helpful in helping us prepare for our special day. She showed us around their beautiful venue, made suggestions from their many years of having weddings at their location, and always responded quickly to any questions we had. Kim, our on site wedding coordinator, was an absolute delight to work with. She is awesome. She was everywhere and stepped in and helped out where she didn’t need to. She definitely made things run so smoothly. Finally, we want to thank Mrs. Easterdays. I would have never thought an owner would actually come out and just make sure your day was so special. I learned after the reception that she doesn’t miss a wedding at her venue.
Thank you so much Ostertag Vistas for allowing us to use your beautiful and historic property!!! It was an honor to get ready in your cottage and think of all the generations that had lived there.
I just wish we could give a higher rating!!! Do not go anywhere else other than Ostertag Vistas, especially for a wedding. THEY ARE TRULY INCREDIBLE!!
Beautiful Venue
We had our wedding in October of this year. The venue is absolutely beautiful and there are so many options where you can hold the ceremony. We had about 70 guests. We had the ceremony on the patio and the reception in the barn. Donna and was the best to work with. She is knowledgeable, professional and efficient. I was so happy to have her throughout this process, she makes sure everything runs as smooth as possible. So happy to have created a memorable day at Ostertag Vistas
Truly wonderful
Ostertag vistas was recommended to us by a couple that had previously gotten married there, when we went to visit we knew we didn’t want to see any where else, it is truly breathtakingly picturesque from the historic barn to the cottages to fern woods we loved it all. The day of our wedding June 21st went so well, everything fell into place. Jennifer was our coordinator an she did an absolutely amazing job she was very professional and kept everything flowing so flawlessly. Family and friends commented on how perfect the venue was and how beautiful, everything about the venue, the music and the food described my husband and I to a T. We couldn’t thank Donna enough for all her help an we would most definitely recommend Ostertag vistas to anyone looking to get married. Beautiful venue.
Ostertag Vistas was the only venue my husband and I toured because as soon as we went on the tour, we just knew it was the one. It is an absolutely breathtaking venue and only hosts one event a day so you have the place all to yourself. The barn itself is so picturesque and beautifully decorated. The grounds are well kept and everyone who works at Ostertag are just wonderful.
Donna was our day of coordinator and she is an absolute rockstar. I had some last minute changes and lots of big requests and she helped me whenever and wherever needed. On the big day, she kept everyone on schedule and helped guests from the ceremony site, to happy hour, to dinner and then dancing. She was a pleasure to work with and our day would not have been as perfect as it was without her.
Our wedding was absolutely stunning. It was everything I had ever dreamed of. All of our guests loved the venue and kept saying how much fun they were having. Ostertag Vistas was simply stunning!
Highly recommend!
Ostertag Vistas is a great place to have your wedding! The venue is breathtaking with multiple options for wedding sites and an inclement weather plan. It was so convenient to be able to have our ceremony outside on the beautiful patio and then stroll a few feet into the historic barn for our reception. Donna is patient and helpful with the planning process and was an awesome day of coordinator. My husband and I were beyond happy with our wedding day and would definitely use this venue again for future events! 🙂
Truly most amazing venue
I was over the moon with this venue! From day 1 to the day of wedding, everyone was beyond helpful. Any question I ever had throughout the planning process would get answered immediately! The venue itself it absolutely stunning, and would highly recommend this venue to everyone who is planning a wedding!
Wedding of our dreams (and more)!!
I (the bride) grew up going to this venue. It is a special and beautiful place. The grounds are absolutely beautiful with panoramic views of the farm. There are historic houses include a log cabin and stone house as well as a smoke house that you can see from the barn and use for photos or a ceremony location. The barn sides can be opened to see the grounds if you have good weather and makes for the perfect back drop for the most important night of your life with your spouse! One of the best things about this venue (besides its beauty and special place to me personally) is the ability for guests to spread out. There is space to socialize outside so you and your guests can visit with each other during the reception. Even better, you and your spouse have multiple opportunities for special moments for just the two of you. We went to the other side of the barn during cocktail hour for a quick few moments together and enjoyed eating our cake and taking breaks on the stairs off the back of the great room. These little moments are so important–our photographer even caught some of our moments while taking other pictures! It was truly a beautiful and perfect night. Donna and Wanda were accommodating and committed that our wedding was everything we had hoped for! Our wedding was everything we had hoped for and surpassed what we had expected to come together! You won’t go wrong with this beautiful location, great owner, manager, and staff!
We had an amazing November wedding at Ostertag Vistas. We had visited several other venues prior to finding Ostertag. We were thrilled with the value, the views, and the barn atmosphere that Ostertag offered. And, important to us, we could choose our caterer. Donna was great to work with and was very flexible with and accommodating to our plans. We were able to choose our own ceremony site, to have a horse and carriage, and to have a live band in the barn! Ostertag, along with Donna, provided the perfect venue for the best day ever!
As soon as I visited Ostertag Vistas for the first time, I fell in love. Our ceremony was in the woods – like a fairytale dream I’ve had since I was a kid – and the reception was in their gorgeous rustic barn. The reception area barely needed any decorating since it is already so beautiful! Donna was wonderful to work with throughout the whole planning process as our wedding coordinator, and very accommodating to our wishes. Our wedding day went so smoothly, and she was a huge part of that. Thank you so much!
Ostertag was great! They are very organized and very responsive. And most reasonably priced barn venue in the area. They were wonderful the day of as well. The barn is stunning and is already decorated, so extra decorations are barely needed. They have a beautiful indoor option for the ceremony, if it rains, which we ended up using. Their day-of coordinator (Kim) was absolutely wonderful and helped my personal coordinator out so much as well. I would definitely recommend them to everyone that I know and can’t wait to hopefully visit them again for another wedding in the future!
I HIGHLY recommend Ostertag Vistas. We were married in November, and I am STILL reeling. Donna was incredible – she was very professional, and always responsive to my (many) inquiries. At the wedding, everyone had an incredible time, and the venue is absolutely stunning. The guests were all in praise of every location, from the ceremony on the patio with an amazing backdrop, to the stable for cocktail hour (which provided much-welcome warmth and a cozy setting), to the INCREDIBLE reception in the main barn. I would do it all over again if I could and would not change a thing! It was a perfect day, and I am so glad we chose Ostertag for our venue.
We had such a great day at Ostertag! I was planning remotely and Donna went above and beyond to help me out during the planning sessions. The venue is absolutely beautiful!
Ostertag is a beautiful venue! Everything turned out exactly as we’d imagined and Ostertag helped make that happen. I was planning from across the country which has it’s own set of challenges, but I was able to get everything I needed from Ostertag and had a beautiful event at their beautiful farm!
We were very happy with our daughter’s wedding at Ostertag Vistas! Donna Easterday is a true professional and was so easy to work with. The venue was clean and beautiful and everything went off without a hitch.
I was just married here on 09/10 and it was a wonderful experience! My father, a very detailed man, was extremely satisfied with the coordination and thoughtfulness of the Ostertag team. Their recommendations for vendors were superb. We booked the horse carriage that they offer and the guests were amazed and the experience of riding down with my father was made more memorable. The barn is absolutely gorgeous at night with the lights glimmering. Donna and our coordinator Terri were amazing and made the entire evening run smoothly. I highly recommend this venue to anyone who wants a romantic and rustic wedding!
As other reviewers have stated, this venue is absolutely gorgeous! As soon as I toured the site I knew it would be perfect for my wedding. I got married at the end of May.
Our ceremony took place at the fernwood location which I would also highly recommend. We got some of the most beautiful pictures there! Ostertag was also very accommodating because we wanted our chairs set up a little differently than the norm. It was also very nice that we had two back-up plans in case of rain- and they were all gorgeous. We even had a question for the landscaper about the grooming of our ceremony site, and we were able to speak to him directly about it. He was super helpful and extremely friendly, and he put us at ease about our concerns.
Overall, I would absolutely recommend this venue, especially if you’re looking to have your ceremony outdoors because the farm is beautiful. All of the staff we came in contact with were a pleasure to work with, and Donna was always quick to respond when we had questions for her. This venue provides so many options for how you want things to be set up both with your ceremony and reception, and we (plus our guests!) had a night we will never forget.
Ostertag Vistas was the perfect setting for my daughter’s wedding. It was absolutely beautiful. We looked at MANY venues before settling on Ostertag and I don’t regret it for a minute. Donna was extremely helpful with the many questions I had throughout the many months of planning!! She always got right back to me and was very reassuring. She took so much stress off of me as the mother of the bride. I would highly recommend paying the little extra for the “Day of Coordinator” as it is worth every cent. I would highly recommend Ostertag Vistas for not only the beauty of the venue, but for the professional and accommodating staff
We are so thankful for Donna’s help and professionalism through the entire planning process and day-of. We hired her as our planner and our wedding would not have been possible without her. She’s seen just about every type of event at this venue, knows the flow and makes sure everything goes smoothly and has a backup plan.
Some of our guests ate downstairs in the stable then the crew moved tables upstairs, brought in extra chairs and created a great dance floor space for our 160 guests. Everyone was raving about the venue and the ceremony was beautiful!
Ostertag is simply wonderful. The venue itself is beautiful. The staff is very helpful and kept our wedding day flowing smoothly without any stress. They are very good and responding to calls and emails quickly. HIGHLY recommend this venue!! Its Pinterest perfect.
My husband and I could not be happier with our decision to get married at Ostertag Vistas. It is a beautiful location and has so many ceremony locations for you to choose from as well as plenty of space for all your guests. Donna and Wanda were helpful from the beginning, answering any questions I had because I booked the venue before I even saw it in person because I did not want to loose my date. Donna was always quick to respond to any emails I sent over the year that led up to our wedding. I also had help from Terri when I went to do my walk through the month before the wedding, she was very knowledgeable about how the day would flow and if I needed any help or suggestions to figure out how I wanted anything to be she had a few answers so that I could decide what would work best for what I wanted on our special day. Fonda was our day of coordinator, and she was also amazing! I hardly even knew she was there and then she would somehow magically appear if we needed something, it was like she just knew! We were unable to have the outdoor ceremony we had hoped for on the patio because it was rainy, cold and windy, but lucky for us Ostertag has a plan B in the beautiful stable which has pretty lighting and they were so nice to let me bring the outside in with all of my pumpkins, hay bales and cornstalks so that I could still have the decorations I wanted for the ceremony. We were also lucky enough that there was a pause in the rain after the ceremony and we were able to get gorgeous pictures around the property. The reception was also beautiful, the barn is decorated so nicely with all the twinkling lights. We loved getting married at Ostertag and had an absolutely amazing day!
Donna and Wanda could not have been more helpful from our first request for information on their venue, to the minute we said good night after the reception clean up. They are professional, yet you feel like you are working with a friend. They made wonderful suggestions, shared their expertise to guide us through the process and yet they were never pushy or overbearing. Leading up to the day of our event, they answered every email promptly and were anxious to accommodate our every wish. During our set up the day before our event, Donna was on the grounds, but left us alone to enjoy our decorating. She was doing some odd jobs herself and would pop in every so often to see if we needed anything. It made for a very relaxed atmosphere, yet we knew she would assist us if any problems would arrive- they didn’t! On the day of our event, Donna was present again, and assisted with getting the guests from the patio and stable room downstairs where we had our cocktail hour, to the barn upstairs for the rest of the reception. The barn and surrounding grounds were immaculate, and every detail that we requested was carried out perfectly. The majority of the guests had never been to Ostertag Vista before and they couldn’t stop talking about what a beautiful venue it was. The weather turned out to be clear but chilly, so Donna had the heat on when we arrived at 2pm (ceremony started at 4pm) and the fireplaces glowing. It made for a very cozy day and evening. I can’t thank them enough for their hard work and gentle guidance that made my daughter’s wedding ceremony and reception perfectly magical! I would highly recommend this venue to everyone that is looking for a rustic barn venue. You won’t be disappointed!
This is a beautiful venue!! It was the only place that my husband and I looked at in person. The day of our wedding, the coordinator, Colleen, was absolutely amazing! They even included something off their inventory that had been taken away so that it would match our favors!! It was a wonderful day and I couldn’t have imagined getting married anywhere else.
Beautiful venue. Reasonably priced and lots of options for a ceremony and reception. They’re always very helpful and attentive! Can’t wait for our big day here!
Donna and family, thank you for sharing your home with us on our big day. You provided a truly magical setting for my dream day and I can’t thank you enough for that!
Wouldn’t of changed anything! Our day was perfect!
I worked with Donna to help plan the event. She was excellent and very patient with me. I had a lot of different ideas i wanted to do and she defiantly rose to the occasion. she worked very closely with me and very promptly responded to all of my questions and emails. Our wedding was originally going to be by the creek in fern valley but because it rained for a week straight prior we had to change our ceremony location. When we showed up for the rehearsal she met us and had a few alternative locations in mind and escorted us to each one and discussed the pros and cons of each one. She was professional and very willing to do whatever i wanted. During the wedding she was around and working hard, and she was always easy to find if i needed her and really helped keep everything running smoothly. the Venue was gorgeous and the weather was perfect. I could not have asked or imagined a more beautiful wedding.
Last weekend, I had my wedding at Ostertag Vistas. I am so happy that I was lucky enough to find this gem in the backyard of Maryland. It is in a beautiful setting and I was so fortunate to be able to enjoy the landscape with great weather.
Donna, one of the owners set expectations right up front. She recommended using a caterer that has worked in the venue before and that is what we did. Everything went smoothly. Fonda was our coordinator and she was absolutely wonderful. The ceremony ended up starting late because of traffic issues and she was very accommodating. It turned out to be a bit buggy by the pond and last minute she put citronella torches up at the ceremony site.
My guests are still talking about how beautiful the grounds and barn is. Although the drive was a little long from Baltimore, when you arrive it feels like you stepped into another world and instantly you are relaxed. Thank you Donna and Fonda for making my day the best it could be! I can’t wait to come back and visit.
I had the wedding of my dreams at Ostertag Vistas. The staff was very friendly and available pre-wedding when I had questions or concerns. One of the reasons I chose this venue is that I was able to shop around for vendors which helped me stick to my budget!! Thank you so much to the venue and staff for helping to make my day unforgettable!!
Absolutely breath-taking, perfect place for a wedding!
Ostertag Vistas is an amazingly beautiful, quiet, and private location – perfect for a wedding! The staff was very cordial and competent and there were options available for a ceremony location in the event of inclement weather which was very nice. There is no limit to where a ceremony can take place and Ostertag Vistas sets up and removes all chairs and tables and chairs for both the ceremony and reception. It could not have been more perfect of a venue for a wedding and everyone commented on they have never been to a more perfect wedding in their lives…. PERFECT!
We couldn’t believe our eyes when we arrived at Ostertag Vistas! It was absolutely beautiful. From the time the parking attendant guided us to our parking spot through the time we left, we and other guests were in awe. It was heaven on earth! They even have a people mover which is used to transport guests to and from a ceremony which was nice in our situation since not everyone was as mobile as others. I understand that Ostertag Vistas meets with the bride about 30 days prior to each event which was helpful in our case since they really took pressure off of the bride to help organize her event. They set up all tables and chairs for the reception and even set up and remove chairs for the ceremony. It was just perfect through and through!
I looked at a lot of outdoors venues during my wedding planning/search. What I found attractive about Ostertag Vista was the barn and outdoor landscape. My future and I quickly settled on Ostertag and couldn’t have been happier with our wedding and experience. The staff were extremely helpful prior to our wedding and very efficient on the day of the event. What we liked most about this venue is that we can bring whatever vendors we want – they don’t require you to use their caterer or D.J. Although this meant we had to coordinate with our vendors, it was more cost effective in the end. They also offered the most time for our event than any of the other venues we met with. Some of the venues informed us that they have two weddings per day and we would only have part of the day. All in all, the weather was great for the time of year. My guests were very happy with my venue selection and the accommodating nature of the venue staff – my future was busy with his buddies most of the time before the wedding and my mother was really nervous. Kudos to the staff for reducing our stress. I’ve recently found out that two of my guests are planning to get married there as well. In summary, I would definitely recommend Ostertag Vista have no regrets with our decision.

With Sweeping Views and Bucolic Scenes, Many Historic Barns and Farms are Finding New Lives as Wedding Venues.
Shabby chic decorations. Rough-hewn beams. Hay bales. Wooden barrels. White lace and promises. If these sound at odds, they’re not. Rather they’re clues that a farm wedding celebration is on tap.
At a farm wedding, white lace may be combined with boots. Groomsmen may sport jeans and cowboy hats. Farm weddings offer a mix of formal and fun that appeals to many couples planning to tie the knot. Here in Frederick County, where farms, complete with old barns, are a part of the landscape and heritage, couples can choose from truly rustic farm surroundings to enclosed, heated venues. Farm weddings offer views of farm fields and ponds in a setting that is vintage Frederick, typically followed by receptions in barns. What better way to spend your special day than by celebrating in a barn?
Most of the following farm wedding venues offer bank barns for receptions. Common to Frederick County, these are traditional German-Swiss style structures with stables below and storage areas above. Such designs made life on the farm easier, and as wedding reception venues, offer separate cocktail and dining/dancing areas.
These farm owners didn’t typically start out in the wedding business. Most wanted to preserve the buildings, while still generating income. In Frederick County, barn venues must be brought up to county code, which means they need modern electrical systems, indoor plumbing, sprinkler systems in case of fire, and disability access. That’s not an easy process for owners, but for most, it’s a way to preserve a valuable part of Frederick County while contributing to the area’s economy.
For those who have trouble getting around, most farms offer golf carts. All of these farm venues also offer guests the use of the farm for most of the day, giving the wedding party ample time to set up and enjoy the surroundings.
Ostertag has been hosting weddings for more than 20 years, since Don Easterday restored the buildings on his Myersville family farm. Initially, he just wanted to preserve all the buildings on the 160-acre farm which dates back to 1711. As a child, he won a national 4-H award in home and grounds beautification, and restoring the farm was his lifelong dream.
“People started asking about getting married here,” says Wanda Easterday. Don died in 2016. Wanda and daughter Donna now set up the weddings that liven up the farm just off Pleasant Walk Road from spring through fall.
The fully enclosed barn offers heat, while massive wooden sliding doors open to provide cross breezes on warm days. Outdoor wedding ceremonies take place by a pond filled with water lilies, in a meadow, in a forested setting surrounded by tall shade trees, or near a log cabin built in 1750.
The barn itself, built in 1928 after the original barn burned, still has the 91-year-old chestnut beams. Tiny white lights twine around the tall, rustic wooden poles, and the wavy floor reminds guests they’re not in a hotel ballroom. Wagon wheels and grapevines with strands of white lights are further reminders.
On the floor of the reception area, artist Dave Moreland painted the Easterday family seal, which includes relics of family history. The barn’s lower level, where the stables once were, is usually where cocktail hour occurs. Visitors can see the massive chestnut logs that hold up the main floor. The cement floor of the stable area is painted to resemble slate.
There are five restrooms and three fireplaces in the barn. Fully enclosed rooms in upper lofts on both sides of the barn serve as dressing areas for bridal parties. The bridal dressing area is plush and carpeted, with tall mirrors. Above this suite is a skybox, perfect for photos of the bride, where slats from the barn roof fan out in a geometric pattern. The groom’s changing area includes Don Easterday’s extensive model railroad collection.
Golf carts take visitors around the farm, and the barn is accessible for people with disabilities. Outside the lower level is space for cornhole and other outdoor games.

One hundred years ago, preserving a farm for anything other than for its agricultural value would have seemed senseless. Farms and farmland covered almost every acre of Frederick County, exclusive of the city itself. Farming was a way of life here. But with progress and a chancing economic base, farmland has given way to industrial parks, neighborhoods, and retail space. So, when someone makes a conscious effort to preserve a farm, it should be noticed.
Such is the case of Ostertag, a picturesque farm located off Rt. 40 in Myersville. Don Easterday and his wife Wanda have spent the last several years renovating the barn, houses, and outbuildings where generations of Don’s family have resided for the past two centuries. Some may have seen Ostertag on the Maryland House and Garden Pilgrimage Tour this past year, but if not, take a look at this unique property, a testament to an era long since passed.
Ostertag, which is German for Easterday, has been in Don’s family since 1770 when Michael Ostertag came to Frederick County from his home in Central Nordlingdon, Germany. Over the years there have been four separate homes on the farm, all occupied by the Easterday family. The oldest, a stone structure, dates back to the 18th century and was the first house built by settlers in that area or Frederick County, says Easterday. A second log house was also built sometime in the 1700’s, although some time later. A brick house built in 1810 collapsed in 1994, and the fourth and youngest house, constructed of log with vinyl siding, sits at the front entrance of the farm and was where Don was born and raised. The focal point of the farm is a large barn, originally built in the 1800’s and rebuilt following a 1929 fire.
All of these buildings, with the exception of the brick house, have been completely renovated in the last five years. What really ignited Don’s move to preserve his family farm was the barn. “Many barns are being destroyed today because of the changes taking place in agriculture,” says Easterday, “and I wanted to go the other way and preserve this one.” Easterday, who is the administrator of the Frederick County Farm Bureau, appreciates the value of farming in this community, although he himself no longer farms. He leases most of the 144-acre property (not including the buildings or immediate land) to a local farmer, but has found an ingenious way to turn a profit without picking up a hoe by rending out the barn, which can hold up to 150 people, for events such as weddings and civic group functions such as dances and dinner parties. This has enabled Easterday to keep the family farm intact while some revenue to help with the cost of upkeep. Even though the farm is of historical value to the community, almost all the money put into the farm to date has been out of Easterday’s pocket. He has done all the renovation work himself, with the exception of the replacement of the barn roof.
Easterday hopes to one day create a cultural center at Ostertag. He already has an artist in residence, David Moreland, whose grand paper-mache sculptures and paints grace the barn’s interior. Easterday hopes to attract more artists in the future where “they can work in a more isolated environment.” For the past three years, he has sponsored “Arts and Crafts in Paradise,” a showcase of works by area artists held at Ostertag each fall. The success of the art fair gives Easterday hope that his dream of a cultural center is slowly being realized.
The barn is a gem. From the sky box atop the barn looking down, one can comprehend the enormity of the renovation task Easterday had before him. What is most impressive about the structure are the large beams across the top of the barn, support beams constructed of single pieces of wood, each from one tree. Each beam is 40-feet across. The name “Ostertag” appears on the floor of the sky box, painted by Moreland and fanning outward to accentuate the vastness of the barn itself. Looking down onto the floor of the bar, one can see a beautiful compass rose with a paschal lamb from the Easterday family coat of arms occupying the center, painted by Moreland on the floor itself. The same compass rose can also be seen on an exterior wall of the barn and one the sign at the entrance to the farm.
Much of the barn is climate controlled providing an ideal space for working artists. The basement of the barn, once used for milking cows and as a horse stable, is now used for art classes. Just outside, adjacent to the barn, is a milk house, built in the 1940’s and enlarged in the 1950’s. Climate controlled, this space is currently being used by David Moreland as part of his studio.
Down the hill from the barn are the two oldest buildings on the property, the stone house and the log cabin. Restored several years ago, Easterday took some liberties with the cabin, replacing a wall on the second floor with glass windows, adding more light and affording a beautiful view of the small farm pond. “This is my hideaway, so I made it the way I wanted it, rather than the way it originally was” he says. It is interesting to note that the chimney on the cabin doesn’t actually come through the second floor, but rather bends around it. The cabin was used for storage over the last century, but at one time as many as 11 people lived in the tiny two-room structure. This was a typical early-German pioneer farm house, built so that many necessities were supplied conveniently and naturally, such as a spring under the house, providing water for the family and refrigeration for food.
When the Easterdays completed work on the cabin, they wanted to do something a little different from the neighbors that following Christmas, so they decorated the cabin as it would have looked at Christmas in the mid-1800s and held an open house for friends and family. There is little in the way of furniture in the cabin, just a chair or two and a table on which the Easterday family bible, dating back to 1765, is displayed under glass at certain times of the year.
Just past the log cabin sits the original stone farm house, built from fieldstone found on the property. Don employed the idea of adaptive reuse when renovating this house, which means he made some changes from the original structure to make better use of the property. Mainly, he omitted a side wall from the basement level of the house and added steps on the inside leading down to the basement, so that the space could be used for storage. The basement was originally partitioned and one side used for storage, the other as the family kitchen. The family would have to exit the front door and go around the outside to reach the basement. Now the steps provide direct access from the main floow to the basement. Also, dormers were added to the house to create more light in the interior. Timbers from the floor and cabinets built into the walls came from the brick house that collapsed. Don isn’t quite sure how he will use this particular house, but he has made improvements that he fells will make the house more user-friendly.
Easterday has just about completed the renovation work on the farm. He is now turning his sights to promoting the property as a great location for artists to come and people to hold special functions. Ostertag is open this month during the third annual Arts and Crafts in Paradise, to be held October 11 and 12 from 1p.m. to 6 p.m. For directions and more information, call 301-293-3345.

“Location, location, location,” is a popular phrase applicable to the importance of a wedding site.
For those who want to get away from it all, Ostertag Vistas combine peacefulness with history and tradition.
Located near Myersville, Ostertag Vistas is run by Don and Wanda Easterday. The 144-acre farm has been in the Easterday family for generations, dating back to 1700.
“Couples are asking to get away from the usual fire hall and hotel idea for ceremonies but still stay traditional,” said Mr. Easterday.
“Ostertag” is German for Easterday, signaling to patrons the importance of the Swiss and German history of the family. After 10 years renovating the barn and surrounding historical homes, the couple opened the vista to the public in 1998 for corporate meetings, church groups, birthdays, anniversaries, and weddings.
“We want it to be a special place, for special events, with special people,” said Mr. Easterday.
The farm itself boasts deep rooted history and incorporates that into the hosting of events. The first house ever built in the area is located on the farm with a working water wheel. It was constructed by Easterday ancestors in the early 1700s.
Another home built in the mid 1700s has been renovated to host wedding ceremonies along its outside walls. A smoke house is still present on the property and once serviced to original four homes built on the farm.
“At one point in time, there were 17 people living within the four homes,” said Mr. Easterday.
Looking out on 144-acres of backyard from the barn’s deck, guests will find a pond in the right hand corner that in the summer is covered in water lilies. Also on the right is the second oldest home used as a ceremony site.
A half mile road travels the expanse of the farm. The bride and groom take a carriage ride around the land while guests wait back at the barn for the reception. Some brides choose to enter their ceremony via the house drawn carriage. Bradford pear trees line the road leading up to the old house.
Other outdoor wedding sites include a gazebo in the middle of the farm, an outdoor stage area covered in grass and trellis work with vines, and a willow tree in the far right corner where the couple walk out to exchange vows.
Inside the barn Mr. Easterday wanted to maintain as much tradition as possible. Beams are exposed, original hay tracks hang from above and a 42 foot wooden piece beam extends the entire width of the barn.
The main room can be used as a dance hall or dinner area. If the weather isn’t ideal, the couple can wed inside the barn. To the left is a lofted stage used to house either more tables for large parties or musicians and DJs.
“The barn is virtually acoustically perfect. Musicians love it here because they are above their audience and have their own space and the guests have room to dance,” said Mr. Easterday.
Underneath the left lies the groom’s room, decorated with a hat rack, chaise lounges and an Oriental rug. Walking out on the deck, newlyweds use the space for toasts and bouquet throwing into the crowd below on the red brick patio.
To the right is a room often used for tables or buffet space. Walking up the steps, one will find the bride’s room, decorated with exposed beams, a full bath and full length mirror, vaulted ceilings and a balcony for her hair and makeup crew.
Going up one more floor, the skybox is where children can play with pillows and checkerboard while looking out onto the dancing crowd below. Many brides choose to toss their bouquets from the balcony.
“We wanted to provide a vantage point to show how these barns were built with wooden pegs and single beams of wood,” said Mr. Easterday. An electric train runs the perimeter of the barn and a working compass rose with the family name is found in the center of the floor.
Below the main hall is the finished basement that used to be a horse stable. The flooring is all stone to remind the guests of the farm’s heritage. Arrowheads are cemented in along with stones mapping the outline of Germany and Switzerland. Their family seal is in the middle of the floor.
To the right is a small room used for kitchen needs and caterers. The room to the left showcases artwork of the region and is called the Ram’s Den, a tribute to the hangout at Mr. Easterday’s alma mater Shepherd College. The sliding glass doors walk out onto the patio where guests can toast the couple on the deck above.
“The wedding idea happened entirely by accident,” said Mrs. Easterday. “The primary objective was to save the barn from neglect and the wedding thing just took off. People were asking for it,” she said.
The pair have handled some interesting requests during their four years in business, including the take-off of a hot air balloon, the entrance of a groom on camel and a western ceremony where the men wore blue jeans and the bride wore a short white dress with white leather knee-high boots.
Couples have come from as far as central Europe, Jordan, and India to wed at Ostertag Vistas.
“The biggest payoff is meeting the most interesting people,” said Mr. Easterday.
Ostertag Vistas is already booking for 2003 and is only available for select dates this year.
“It’s uniqueness, it’s peacefulness, the space and the flexibility of the rooms” are what separate Ostertag Vistas from other venues, Mrs. Easterday said. “We love the history and just being someplace different.”
